Objective:  Impress upon people the need to examine their relationship with God.

The book of Judges depicts a cyclical pattern that Israel (and individuals) generally repeat.  They grow lax, loose their focus on God and drift into increasing sin.  God gives them over to the lusts of their heart and they find themselves in trouble.  They then repent and call to God for help and God rescues them.  Here we ask where we are in this cyclical pattern and what we ought to be doing to keep our nation from being “given over” to our nation’s degrading passions and depraved minds.

Objective:  Inspire and direct individuals to encourage others in their Christian walk.

It is not enough for folks to hear the Gospel once and be left entirely on their own.  There is too much struggle, too much unseen spiritual warfare.  God intends for Christians to share spiritual fellowship for mutual support.  Here are some ways in which we might be an encouragement to others.

Objective:  Help people trust God will all their cares.

Do our hearts tremble when we need to take a stand on righteousness?  Does decay enter our bones when we look at national and world trends and see the advance of wicked and evil forces and see abominations being accepted by our nation and even by some churches?  We ought to know that we can entrust our very lives and souls to God in Christ, no matter what events come along.

Objective:  Motivate each to be more determined to know and do all of Jesus’ Word.

To call yourself a Christian is not enough.  To claim to be faithful is not enough.  You must really be a Christian, and you must really be faithful.  To be Christians, to be saved, we must be doers of God’s word and not hearers only.

Listen to audio;  Control Your Thoughts

Objective:  Inspire people to take control and direct where their thoughts go.

There IS a connection between where we allow our thoughts to dwell and what we ourselves become.  This is not “psychology”,  it is Bible!  It is spirituality!  It is truth.  The Bible teaches that we need to control our thoughts because what we allow our thoughts to dwell on, determines what we become.

Objective:  Encourage Christians to make resolutions that will honor God with their lives.

Today’s reading depicts Joshua leading the nation Israel in resolving to follow God.   A “resolution” is a choice, a decision, and a commitment.   Such “resolutions are common throughout the Bible.  We ought to make resolutions that have eternal benefits and enhance our relationship to God.

Objective:  Help people realize that Christianity means freedom rather than oppression.

Christianity is often depicted as a burden, as a group of oppressors with harsh judgments and rigid lifestyles leading to a life of misery and entrapment.  But Christ died to bring us freedom!  Scripture speaks of the glorious freedom of the children of God and the perfect law that gives freedom. Rightly understood, Christianity is about freedom!
