Jeremiah 25:15-18

“This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, said to me: “Take from my hand this cup filled with the wine of my wrath and make all the nations to whom I send you drink it. 16When they drink it, they will stagger and go mad because of the sword I will send among them.”  17So I took the cup from the LORD’S hand and made all the nations to whom he sent me drink it: 18Jerusalem and the towns of Judah, its kings and officials, to make them a ruin and an object of horror and scorn and cursing, as they are today;  “

The “cup”, particularly the cup containing the fruit of the vine, is often used to portray relationship and what is to come, what people are to endure or experience.  Here, in Jeremiah, the relationship of the people with God is NOT good.  Here, Israel and other nations as well are being made to drink of a “cup” that is disaster, because of their rebellious and adulterous hearts.

I don’t want to drink that cup.  TODAY, God extents a different cup for us to drink.  In Christ, God extends a cup for us to drink that is peace and love and fellowship with Him.

Which “cup” do you want to drink?  To drink of the cup that is peace on love and fellowship, one must be right with God.  One must be forgiven through the blood of Christ.  One must be genuinely walking by the Spirit of Christ.  One must be in good fellowship with God through the covenant that Christ established.

Pray with me;  Father, thank you for the offer of peace through the blood of Christ.  Help me to be yours.  Touch my conscience and show me anything that might be displeasing to you.  Show me any rebelliousness that I might have toward you.  Strengthen my spirit to repent of these things and correct them that I may be a glory to your name.   Amen.

Three blessings we have as a result of Christ’s blood, three things to remember as as we partake of this cup.

1 Peter 1:17-23

17Since you call on a Father who judges each man’s work impartially, live your lives as strangers here in reverent fear. 18For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers, 19but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. 20He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake. 21Through him you believe in God, who raised him from the dead and glorified him, and so your faith and hope are in God.

22Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for your brothers, love one another deeply, from the heart. 23For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God.

We are about to partake of a memorial to our Lord, remembering the blood that He shed on our behalf.  We are going to have a small cup of “fruit-of-the-vine”.  Grape juice.  This represents and reminds us of the blood that Christ shed.

Sometimes folks don’t pay much attention to the communion service.  It is like this is “ho-hum” blood.  It is not.  This represents “the precious blood of Christ.”  Holy and pure, and sacrificed out of love for us.  If we can grasp the precious nature of this, it will move us to live here in reverent fear.  It will move us to purify ourselves in obedience to truth, and it will move us to love one another, deeply, from the heart.

Pray with me;  Father, open the eyes of our hearts so we can fully realize how precious is the blood by which we were bought.  Teach us to live lives of thankfulness for what we have received through Christ.  Help us to live pure and godly lives and to serve one another from the heart, out of love, that you may be glorified.  Amen.

Colossians 1:18-20

18 And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. 19 For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.”

Thought;            Jesus is absolutely supreme.  All power and authority in heaven and on earth.  The very full essence of God was in Him even while He was here in human flesh.  He came and sacrificed that we might be reconciled to Him.  We have peace through His blood which is represented by this fruit of the vine we are about to drink.

Prayer;            Father we thank you for the love you have for us that you saw fit to become flesh and dwell amongst us.  Please strengthen us in our faith and our commitment that we may live worthy of the love you have shown for us.  Strengthen our awareness of your all supremacy and fill us with confidence in your ability to care for us and to vindicate us spiritually.  As we partake of this cup, we remember the covenant you have established with us through Christ, and we renew our commitment to that covenant.  Our desire is to be holy and that we would belong entirely to you.  We place ourselves fully in your care.  To you be thanks and praise.  Amen
